Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Heidelberg

The charming village of Garmisch is used by many as a base for hiking (or taking the cable car) to the summit of Zugspitze, Germany's tallest mountain. Also nearby is a hiker's favorite, Partnach Gorge. Unfortunately, it rained non-stop during our visit and the summit was obscured by clouds. But the village had plenty of shops, restaurants, and beer halls that kept us occupied.

                                                           Even a sausage vending machine!

Heidelberg was a pleasant surprise, although our initial stroll was sobering. The sidewalk plaques below signify those who were deported during WWII, including the one on the right for Rositia Wertheimer who was murdered at the Auschwitz extermination camp.

Roughly a quarter of Heidelberg's population are students. Heidelberg University, founded in 1386, is Germany's oldest--and highly regarded--institution of higher education.

The plaque in the sidewalk below commemorates the 1518 Heidelberg Disputation, in which Martin Luther participated.

Our guide posing with the famous "Bridge Monkey." Touching various parts of the monkey are said to bring good luck, or a return to Heidelberg.

The building below houses the only fraternity associated with the University.
