Salzburg, of Mozart and the Sound of Music

Ahh,...Salzburg and its castle on the hill, Hohensalzburg Fortress.

View of the castle from the Mirabell Gardens, where scenes from The Sound of Music were filmed.

Mozart lived at the address below for some time.

Birthplace of Christian Doppler, who discovered the Doppler effect, important in scientific fields such as radar and astronomy.

Pedestrian bridge over the Salzach River, named for the barges of salt it once transported. The bridge is laden with lover's locks.

Traditional dress and, of course, chocolates galore!!

The house where Mozart was born.

                                                                  The Collegiate Church.

Fountain at the Rezidenz, the former palace of Salzburg's elite.

The Salzburg Cathedral, consecrated in 1628, where Mozart was baptized.

                                                                    Interesting staircase.

St. Peter's Church, founded in 1147.

Hellbrunn Palace, south of the city, was built by Archbishop Sittikus in 1610. The Archbishop was a prankster, known for trick fountains which would soak unsuspecting guests, and the palace today houses an eclectic collection of exhibits.

The "little-month palace" which was erected in one month when a visitor remarked to the Archbishop that a building on the hill would improve the view from Hellbrunn.

Below, rooms in the St. Peter Stiftskulinarium Restaurant, in the shadow of St. Peter's Church in Salzburg. The restaurant claims that Charlemagne dined on the site in 803, making it the oldest restaurant in Europe.
